Um von Livigno aus auf die Schweizer Seite des Aufstiegs zum Stilfserjoch zu gelangen, muss man den Fahrrad-Shuttle-Service durch den Gallo-Tunnel nehmen. Vom alten Dorf Santa Maria steigt man entlang der italienisch-schweizerischen Grenze zwischen den Almen des Umbrailpasses auf. Ein Stück weit ist der Anstieg nicht asphaltiert, aber die Strade Bianche werden sorgfältig gepflegt. Es gibt kaum Autoverkehr, was die Radfahrer sehr zu schätzen wissen.
