The Thermal Springs of Bormio, Some of Europe’s Finest

Naturally warm water. Not all spa water is created equal! The spa water in Bormio is naturally warm and has many therapeutic properties. Feel the difference on your skin! People have known since ancient times that Bormio’s spa water is precious.

Even Pliny the Elder knew about it and he extolled its therapeutic and muscle relaxing properties. With nine natural springs which supply the three wellness spas, Bormio Terme, QC Terme Bagni Nuovi and QC Terme Bagni Vecchi, Bormio is the wellness mountain. Your wellness!

The source of the thermal springs

Where does our spa water come from and why is it warm? If you are thinking of an underground volcano, I am sorry to disappoint you but the truth is a bit different! The spa waters of Bormio rise at between 36°C and 41°C thanks to a natural phenomenon known as the geothermal gradient.

In other words: the deeper the water goes, the warmer it gets. But we are getting ahead of ourselves. The nine naturally warm springs rise on Monte Reit, the mountain which dominates the Bormio valley. When it rains or the snow melts in spring, the water seeps through the cracks in the rocks and descends deep into the internal cavities. As it descends, the pressure of the water and its temperature increase as a result of the phenomenon of the geothermal gradient.

For every 100 metres that the water descends, its temperature increases by between 1°C and 3°C. As it does so, the water is enriched with precious minerals that give it its curative and muscle relaxing properties when it comes to the surface. Only an impermeable layer of rock stops the water from flowing all the way to the heart of the mountain and instead forces it to the surface, creating the nine natural springs of Bormio.

Do you know how our spa water is classified?
Our spa water is classified as sulphate-bicarbonate-alkaline-earthy and is recognised, including by the Italian health ministry, for its health giving properties so much so that it is used at the Bormio Terme for inhalations, mud treatments and thermal baths.

Do you know when the spa water is at its warmest?

Contrary to what you might think, in winter the water reaches 41°C, when the springs are trapped by the snow and ice whilst, during the rainy summers, cold water seeps into the springs and the temperature falls to 36°C.
Fortunately, the springs never fall below 36°C!
