Sport, nature and history on the Gavia Pass

Wind back the clock to 1988 on the Gavia Pass, when Dutch cyclist Erik Breuking raced to victory in a sub-zero blizzard, with two metres of snow on the roadside, in what remains one of the most incredible stages in the history of the Giro d’Italia.

When the road opens in the summer you can pedal that very same route, and discover a mountain pass steeped in history, sporting and otherwise.

Check the Gavia webcam and plan your cycling adventure in Valtellina. Here's everything you need to know to take on the Gavia Pass from Bormio: 24.8 km in length, 1,396 m elevation gain, an average gradient of 5.6%, maximum gradient 12%, 10 bends and an altitude of 2,621 m at the pass.
