Alta Valtellina is home to a network of unpaved roads and mule tracks ideal for gravel biking.
Many follow ancient transport routes like the salt and wine road which connected Bormio to markets on the other side of the Alps. To tackle the steep Alpine terrain, you need strong legs (or at least low gears). In return you'll be rewarded by incredible views and a feeling of wilderness you'll find in few other places in the Alps. Try heading up to the Cancano lakes via a panoramic, unpaved road from Premadio. This even climb leads to a wide, tranquil valley between Italy and Switzerland, where you can ride against a Canadian-style backdrop of limpid lakes and jagged peaks.
