Panoramic rides along historic military routes 

Alta Valtellina is home to a network of unpaved roads and mule tracks ideal for gravel biking.

Many follow ancient transport routes like the salt and wine road which connected Bormio to markets on the other side of the Alps. To tackle the steep Alpine terrain, you need strong legs (or at least low gears). In return you'll be rewarded by incredible views and a feeling of wilderness you'll find in few other places in the Alps. The Cancano Lakes, for example, are accessible by gravel bike via the scenic Boscopiano climb. Passing Bagni Nuovi and Bagni Vecchi, followed by a short stretch of the Stelvio road, the route follows a dirt track across the Braulio stream up to Solena. From here, you enter a wild borderland between Italy and Switzerland, ideal for riding in solitude among majestic peaks and "Canada-style" lakes.
