The starting point is the village of Baruffini, a hamlet of Tirano located at the border with Switzerland, to reach the locality of Sasso del Gallo and then continue and return to Baruffini. The route, equipped with signposts and information panels, is about 8.5 kilometers long, with an elevation gain of 450 meters. It is not particularly demanding but requires some training.

To get passionate about stories of smugglers, filled with chases and shootouts, you don't need to go to the cinema or read a novel. Just walk the Smuggling and Memory Path that leads from the hamlet of Baruffini in Tirano to Sasso del Gallo. Until the 1960s, paths and mule tracks cutting through the mountains above Tirano were the scene of trafficking and clashes between "spalloni" (human smugglers) and law enforcement. The former tried to transport goods from the Swiss territory to resell them on the black market while the latter tried to counter this illegal trade.

The Smuggling and Memory Path was created in 2007 thanks to the initiative of some customs officers from the ANFI Section of Tirano and some former smugglers who personally experienced the smuggling phenomenon. It is a project that aims to tell what this illegal activity represented for the local population, over a historical period lasting until the mid-20th century, when many Valtellina families could not live decently. A situation that led many young people to engage in this activity in order to improve their living conditions.

Si parte dal paese di Baruffini, frazione di Tirano posta al confine con la Svizzera, per raggiungere la località di Sasso del Gallo per poi proseguire e ritornare a Baruffini. Il percorso, attrezzato con cartelli indicatori e pannelli informativi, ha una lunghezza di circa 8,5 chilometri, per un dislivello di 450 metri. Non risulta particolarmente impegnativo ma serve un minimo di allenamento.

Per appassionarsi a storie di contrabbandieri, fatte di inseguimenti e scontri a fuoco, non serve andare al cinema o leggere un romanzo. Basta percorrere il Sentiero del Contrabbando e alla Memoria che dalla frazione Baruffini di Tirano ci conduce al Sasso del Gallo. Fino agli anni Sessanta, sentieri e mulattiere che intagliano le montagne sopra Tirano erano teatro di traffici e scontri fra “spalloni” e forze dell’ordine. I primi cercavano di trasportare merci dal territorio elvetico per poi rivenderle al mercato nero mentre i secondi tentavano di contrastare questo commercio illegale.

Il sentiero del Contrabbando e alla Memoria nasce nel 2007 grazie all’iniziativa di alcuni f inanzieri della Sezione Anfi di Tirano e alcuni ex contrabbandieri che hanno vissuto in prima persona il fenomeno del contrabbando. Un progetto che intende raccontare cosa ha rappresentato questa attività illecita per la popolazione locale, lungo un periodo storico durato fino alla metà del Novecento, in cui tante famiglie valtellinesi non riuscivano a vivere in modo decoroso. Una situazione che portò numerosi giovani a dedicarsi a questa attività al f ine di migliorare le proprie condizioni di vita.

Die Strecke, ausgestattet mit Wegweiserschildern und Informationstafeln, hat eine Länge von etwa 8,5 Kilometern und eine Höhendifferenz von 450 Metern. Sie ist nicht besonders anspruchsvoll, erfordert jedoch eine gewisse Grundfitness.

Um sich für Schmugglergeschichten zu begeistern, die von Verfolgungen und Schusswechseln handeln, braucht man nicht ins Kino zu gehen oder einen Roman zu lesen. Es reicht, den Schmuggler- und Erinnerungsweg zu gehen, der vom Weiler Baruffini in Tirano zum Sasso del Gallo führt. Bis in die 1960er Jahre waren Pfade und Maultierpfade, die die Berge über Tirano durchziehen, Schauplatz von Schmuggelgeschäften und Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den "Spalloni" und den Ordnungskräften. Die Ersteren versuchten, Waren aus der Schweiz zu transportieren, um sie auf dem Schwarzmarkt zu verkaufen, während die Letzteren versuchten, diesen illegalen Handel zu vereiteln.

Der Schmuggler- und Erinnerungsweg wurde 2007 ins Leben gerufen, dank der Initiative einiger Finanzbeamten der ANFI-Sektion Tirano und einiger ehemaliger Schmuggler, die das Schmuggelwesen aus erster Hand erlebt haben. Ein Projekt, das erzählen will, welche Bedeutung diese illegale Tätigkeit für die lokale Bevölkerung über einen historischen Zeitraum bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts hatte, in dem viele Familien in der Valtellina keinen würdigen Lebensunterhalt verdienen konnten. Eine Situation, die viele junge Menschen dazu veranlasste, sich dieser Tätigkeit zu widmen, um ihre Lebensbedingungen zu verbessern.
