A walk through the streets of downtown Chiavenna to admire historic buildings, museums and stores is definitely a good idea before getting on the bike.

Leaving the heart of the town, you begin to climb in altitude, facing a first sloping section at the height of the nucleus of Bette.

It continues uphill alongside the Liro Torrent, crossing the villages of San Giacomo Filippo, Gallivaggio with the shrine dedicated to the apparition of October 10, 1942, Lirone and Cimaganda.

When you reach the Campodolcino plain, you will face a flat section before riding the historic ten hairpin bends leading to Pianazzo. Along the way you will have the opportunity to admire the waterfall with a 180-meter drop. Shortly after, you meet the junction that on the right leads to the renowned tourist resort of Madesimo, while on the left begin the hairpin bends and tunnels of the Andossi from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the entire upper Vallespluga. You then reach the artificial lake of Montespluga, the village of the same name, and the last steep hairpin bends that climb up to the Spluga Pass.

For many centuries the Spluga Pass saw the incessant transit, all year round, of wayfarers, beasts of burden, wagons and carriages. Shortly after the construction of the Spluga road, in 1823, for safety purposes during the winter period, the important avalanche protection tunnel south of the tollhouse was built. It now represents one of the last vestiges of the massive roadwork effort undertaken in the 19th century to keep ahead of the dangers of winter.

Finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages indicate that the Spluga Pass was traversed as early as prehistoric times. The name "spluga" is quite common in Valchiavenna and stands for mountain locations; it comes from "spelu(n)ca," meaning spelonca, cave.

Una passeggiata tra le vie del centro di Chiavenna per ammirare palazzi storici, musei e negozi è sicuramente un’ottima idea prima di mettersi in sella alla bicicletta.

Lasciato il cuore della cittadina si inizia a salire in quota affrontando un primo tratto in pendenza all’altezza del nucleo di Bette.

Si prosegue in salita affiancando il Torrente Liro attraversando gli abitati di San Giacomo Filippo, Gallivaggio con il Santuario dedicato all’apparizione del 10 Ottobre 1942, Lirone e Cimaganda.

Giunti alla piana di Campodolcino si affronta un tratto pianeggiante prima di percorrere gli storici dieci tornanti che portano a Pianazzo. Durante il percorso si avrà la possibilità di ammirare la cascata con un salto di 180 metri. Poco dopo si incontra il bivio che a destra conduce alla rinomata stazione turistica di Madesimo, mentre a sinistra iniziano i tornanti e le gallerie degli Andossi da dove si gode di un bel panorama su tutta l’alta Vallespluga. Si giunge poi al lago artificiale di Montespluga, al paesino omonimo e agli ultimi ripidi tornanti che salgono fino al Passo Spluga.

Per molti secoli il passo dello Spluga vide il transito incessante, in ogni periodo dell’anno, di viandanti, bestie da soma, carri e carrozze. Poco tempo dopo la costruzione della strada dello Spluga, nel 1823, a scopi di sicurezza durante il periodo invernale, fu edificata l’importante galleria paravalanghe a sud del casello daziario. Essa rappresenta oggi una delle ultime testimonianze del massiccio impegno a livello di opere stradali intrapreso nel XIX secolo per tenere testa ai pericoli dell’inverno.

Ritrovamenti dell’età del bronzo e del ferro indicano che il Passo dello Spluga è stato percorso già in epoca preistorica. Il nome “spluga” è abbastanza comune in Valchiavenna e sta ad indicare le località di montagna; deriva da “spelu(n)ca”, cioè spelonca, grotta.

Nach dem Verlassen des Stadtzentrums beginnt man, an Höhe zu gewinnen, indem man einen ersten abschüssigen Abschnitt am Kern von Bette in Angriff nimmt.

Entlang des Torrente Liro geht es weiter bergauf, vorbei an den Dörfern San Giacomo Filippo, Gallivaggio mit seiner Wallfahrtskirche, die der Erscheinung vom 10. Oktober 1942 gewidmet ist, Lirone und Cimaganda.

In der Ebene von Campodolcino angekommen, geht es über eine flache Strecke, bevor die historischen zehn Kehren nach Pianazzo führen. Unterwegs können Sie den Wasserfall bewundern, der 180 Meter in die Tiefe stürzt. Kurz darauf kommt man an eine Abzweigung, die rechts zum bekannten Ferienort Madesimo führt, während links die Kehren und Tunnel der Andossi beginnen, von denen aus man einen schönen Blick auf das gesamte obere Vallespluga hat. Dann erreicht man den Stausee von Montespluga, das gleichnamige Dorf und die letzten steilen Kehren bis zum Splugapass.

Während vieler Jahrhunderte war der Splugapass zu allen Jahreszeiten ein ständiger Durchgangsort für Reisende, Lasttiere, Fuhrwerke und Kutschen. Kurz nach dem Bau der Splugastrasse im Jahr 1823 wurde der wichtige Lawinenschutztunnel südlich des Mauthauses für die Sicherheit während der Wintermonate gebaut. Er ist heute eines der letzten Überbleibsel des massiven Strassenbaus, der im 19. Jahrhundert zur Abwehr der Wintergefahren unternommen wurde.

Funde aus der Bronze- und Eisenzeit weisen darauf hin, dass der Splügenpass bereits in prähistorischer Zeit begangen wurde. Der Name "spluga" ist im Valchiavenna weit verbreitet und weist auf Bergorte hin; er leitet sich von "spelu(n)ca", d.h. spelonca, Höhle, ab.
