Bormio in the spring is a riot of colours and scents as the mountainside awakens from its slumber. Here are some tips on how best to enjoy the season.
Ski touring at altitude
The ski touring season in Bormio and Alta Valtellina extends long past winter as many of our valleys and peaks still have plenty of snow cover. Keen tourers can explore the many routes around the area. Beginners can skin up to mountain refuges, while the more experienced can summit peaks over 3,000 m above sea level.
The contrast between the snowy peaks and green valleys is a sight to behold, and the safest way to do so is to go with an Alpine Guide.
Walks around Bormio in bloom
The first flowers in the fields announce the arrival of spring and the return of the walking season.
The park between the Bagni Nuovi and Bagni Vecchi has plenty of trails ideal for spring walks, winding through woodland carpeted with bright swathes of heather. Starting from the Bagni Nuovi follow the paths to the Pliniana spring and the Bagni Vecchi.
Relax at the thermal spas
Any time is a good time to relax at Bormio's thermal spas. The Bagni Nuovi and Bagni Vecchi are perfect for luxuriating in the warmth of the mineral-rich waters that flow directly from hot springs on the mountainside, while Bormio Terme in the centre of Bormio offers fun and relaxation for all ages.
Enjoy the beautiful Alpine scenery and spring colours through the steam rising from the open-air pools.
Explore the old town
Go for a stroll through the streets of Bormio's old town in the spring and visit the museums and churches, like the Church of St Gervasius and Protasius in the main square, or the Medieval Church of the Holy Spirit (Santo Spirito).
And why not try a few local specialities at the local restaurants, like pizzoccheri, sciatt, local cheese and after-dinner liqueur Amaro Braulio.
Cycling and mountain biking
May is Giro time and Bormio is a cycling mecca. Enthusiasts are out on their bikes as soon as spring comes around, ready to take on some of the legendary climbs near Bormio, like the ascent to the Mortirolo Pass and the road to Cancano to name but two. The Alpine passes, like the Stelvio and Gavia, open between late May and early June, depending on the road conditions.
If you prefer trails to tarmac, you can find plenty of mountain biking opportunities for all levels around the Bormio area.
