Ski touring in the spring

Tips and routes around Bormio and Alta Valtellina

Spring is a magical season for ski touring enthusiasts. There are so many routes to explore in and around Bormio, from untouched valleys to rugged peaks.

Why go ski touring in Valtellina in March and April?

  • Ideal conditions: mild spring temperatures and glacier snow.

  • Open refuges: take a well-earned break at one of the Alpine refuges open from early March onwards. These include the Forni, Branca, Pizzini and Stella Alpina Refuges near the Forni glacier; Agriturismo Baita Caricc and the Federico in Dosdè Refuge in Val Viola; and the Malga San Colombano near San Colombano.

  • Open lifts: easy access to higher trails at Bormio 2000, Santa Caterina Valfurva and Cima Piazzi-San Colombano.

  • Local and international ski touring events: including the Bormio-Livigno Traverse and the Ortles-Cevedale International Ski Touring Meet.

  • Olympic sport: in 2026, ski mountaineering will make its debut as an Olympic event at the next Winter Games on the Stelvio slope in Bormio.

Ski touring routes around Bormio

In the spring, the Bormio area boasts a varied network of ski touring routes suitable for all levels.

  • Skimo Trails: managed, marked trails to train on or try the sport for the first time – like the Plaghera trail.

  • Classic Itineraries: more challenging ascents like the Corno San Matteo or Monte Pasquale that require a certain level of fitness and technique.

  • Big Adventures: technical, high-altitude routes on glaciers or steep terrain, like Cima Piazzi or Gran Zebrù.

Preparation, safety, equipment

Ski touring requires a good level of fitness and the right equipment. In terms of clothing, you need three layers: a breathable base layer, a warm mid layer with good freedom of movement, and a protective outer layer that keeps out wind, rain and snow.

Essential ski touring equipment includes:

  • ski touring boots

  • touring skis with special bindings, skins and poles

  • crampons for icy sections

  • avalanche kit (shovel, probe and transceiver)

The local Alpine Guides are always on hand to advise on the best route and accompany you on your mountain adventures.
