The Ferrata Vigneron in Caspoggio (Valmalenco, Sondrio) is an athletic, vertical and exposed ferrata but without any particular technical difficulties. The ferrata climbs long vertical slabs abundantly equipped with stirrups and very taut rope. Given the low altitude it could be climbed practically all year round except in the cold winter months. The ferrata remains shaded in the morning, and generally receives little sun in the winter months. Beware in winter for possibility of ice on the return path.
Ferrata: We begin with a leaping, almost vertical wall that slants a few meters to the left in the final section. We continue along a small wall a few meters that leads to the large ledge we find at the end of the first portion of the ferrata.
An easy traverse equipped to the left (north) on the edge of the ledge leads to the second section of the ferrata. This section is longer than the first and begins with rock crags alternating vertical and more leaning portions until it leads to an almost vertical ramp. A short traverse leads to a passage between an edge and a dihedral, which is rather airy but spectacular: behind it is a contrasting view of the wonderful village of Primolo. The ferrata leans for a few tens of meters along a leaning rock edge.
At this point you reach the most vertical section of the ferrata, the Old England Wall, which is to the left of the ferrata. An old climbing section with recently restored routes. The beginning of this wall is overhanging for a few meters and requires a short, somewhat athletic and exposed step. Beyond it the wall continues vertical for a few tens of meters.
At its end the ferrata slants to the left (north) and with easy crags leads to the short but beautiful Tibetan bridge. The bridge is about 12 meters long and ends with a short vertical and very aerial wall that you have to climb vertically for a couple of meters and then go around it to the left on a beautiful and aerial edge (wonderful background on the village of Chiesa Valmalenco and the San Giuseppe valley). Past this edge along about ten meters you reach a convenient ledge. For those who want to avoid the Tibetan bridge there is a via ferrata section that bypasses it, continuing to the right on the ledge for an easy, leaning route.
From here the ferrata resumes with another beautiful and long wall, vertical in places, slanting in places to the left. The ferrata at this point is beautifully exposed both on the base of the rock structure as well as on the Valmalenco villages. At the end of this wall the ferrata drops and becomes easier and leaning. In addition to the satisfaction of climbing from this point one enjoys, almost suddenly, the wonderful view of first Pizzo Scalino and then the village of Caspoggio. Here, although easy, the route continues with the lifeline to an equipped path that leads to the end (1h 45' from the attack - ca 2h total)
