From Passo Stelvio, where the highest museum in Europe is located, take the trail S506 that climbs to Passo delle Platigliole and leads to the summit of Scorluzzo at 3095 m. From the peak, descend the southwest ridge bypassing some broken rock spires among which the Austrian defenses from the First World War are clearly visible. After passing the last Austrian outpost, enter no man’s land until you reach the first Italian redoubt. Continue along the ridge to a new elevation marked by a cairn. Here begins a system of stone walkways and trenches overlooking the Valle dei Vitelli. A short descent leads to a rocky spur transformed into a fortress by the alpine troops. Among the remains of huts, descend back to the main trail leading to Malga Scorluzzo and then continue on trail S505 which arrives at the III Cantoniera.
