ModerateThis hike takes you on a journey to discover one of the most remarkable high-altitude archaeological sites in the Alps. From the Berni Mountain Hut at Gavia Pass, follow the trail toward Punta Segnale, passing just before the Bernasconi Hut, until you reach the area where some of Europe’s highest rock carvings are preserved.
Located at an altitude of about 3,000 meters, at the foot of the Pizzo Tresero glacier, these engravings have been brought to light thanks to the recent retreat of the glacier and date back to a period between 3,600 and 3,200 years ago, during the Middle Bronze Age. The markings carved into the rocks smoothed by the glacier attest to the presence of humans in the high mountains since prehistoric times and suggest the existence of a true rock sanctuary.
The trail offers spectacular views of the Ortles-Cevedale massif and allows visitors to combine naturalistic, historical, and archaeological interests in the heart of the Stelvio National Park.
