The Cardinello Gorge takes its name from the nearby Monte Cardine, once one of the most important routes connecting to Northern Europe, and is famous for the path carved into the steep valley side, with some sections stepped directly into the rock. The route starts from Isola, at 1268 meters elevation, initially ascending on the valley's right side, passing through the settlements of Mottaletta and Rasdeglia. The climb continues until the carriageway narrows to a path and climbs slightly more before following the cliff face over the stream: a ledge carved into the rock that slowly ascends for over 500 meters until it reaches Stuetta, below the Montespluga dam. Once at the top, it is possible to continue to the village of Montespluga. After a well-deserved rest, you can take the return descent through the gorge, cross the Andossi plateau to reach Madesimo, or use public transport connections to return to Isola.
