The route from Chiesa to Chiareggio and the subsequent section towards Passo del Muretto almost entirely retraces the path of the Rusca Trail that starts from Sondrio. The average slope and elevation gain are manageable, except for the last stretch after Chiareggio. To avoid cycling on the busy road, at Valrosera (just after the quarries) take a wide dirt road to the left that descends into the Mallero riverbed and climbs the valley up to the plain after San Giuseppe. The route continues along the valley floor near the river to Chiareggio. The subsequent climb on the partially paved road of Muretto is very steep (over 15%) and requires medium motor assistance, but ultimately leads to the splendid balcony of Alpe dell'Oro with views of the surrounding valleys and Monte Disgrazia.
