When in Alta Valtellina, make sure to check out the Stelvio Pass. At 2,778 m above sea level, it's the highest paved mountain pass in Italy, linking the three regions of Lombardy and South Tyrol in Italy, and Engadin in Switzerland.
Starting from Bormio, head up the switchback turns of the queen of Alpine roads, soak up the spectacular scenery of the Stelvio National Park and relive the epic cycling feats of the Giro d'Italia. From the Stelvio Pass you can go ski touring or mountaineering in the Ortler Alps or explore the trails of the First World War, where you can still find remnants of defensive positions. And that's not all, in the summer you can ski on the Stelvio Glacier.
