Explore the setting of World War One battles

Visit the Alpine trenches

You may not know that several battles took place right here in Valtellina, in what is now the Stelvio National Park.

Soldiers found themselves fighting in extreme conditions at over 3,000 m above sea level, surrounded by ice and snow, in what has come to be known as the White War.

Today you can still find evidence of this WW1 front around the Stelvio and Gavia Passes, as well as the Valle dei Forni. Download the app 'Oltre le tracce della storia' (the name is Italian, but it is also available in English and German) and choose from 16 historic itineraries where you can explore the remains of military bases, trenches and artillery posts.
