Around the Bormio area
Il Trenino Rosso del Bernina, un trenino chiamato desiderio
UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Trenino Rosso is a journey through nature, history and culture. It connects two countries, two different worlds that have blended together perfectly. The Trenino Rosso is not just a train journey, it is the journey itself.
A journey through nature: from palm trees to the apple orchards of Tirano, passing through chestnut trees, fir and larch forests to perennial glaciers. And then there are the beautiful lakes, so clear that their colours seem almost unreal, waterfalls and streams. It is not uncommon to spot deer, foxes and squirrels and, at higher altitudes, ibexes or eagles.
It is a journey through different cultures, languages and religions (the more expansive Italian culture and the more reserved Swiss culture) but also through history. The railway line, built over 120 years ago, will amaze you with its modernity and cutting-edge engineering.
Tirano
Tirano is home to the only basilica in the province of Sondrio: the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tirano, built on the site where, according to Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Blessed Mario Omodei on September 29, 1504, promising an end to the plague. Framing this itinerary are the area’s characteristic dry-stone walls, which outline the terraced vineyards in a remarkable harmony between nature and human craftsmanship — now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Along the way from Bormio, it’s worth stopping in Grosio to visit the Rock Engravings Park, where ancient carvings etched into the stone tell the story of the first Alpine communities and their beliefs.
