The Alpine Ski World Cup is on Bormio’s Stelvio Slope

28–29 December

Unmissable. The Alpine Ski World Cup is the event we wait for all year. Whether at home on the big screens or live in the stands, cheering for the top ski champions is an electrifying experience—one to experience at least once in a lifetime!

Bormio is a legendary venue in alpine skiing. Since their creation, Bormio’s ski slopes have become a staple of the World Cup circuit, hosting some of the most memorable and significant moments in the sport. Champions like Deborah Compagnoni and Pietro Vitalini were born on these slopes, and countless iconic moments have been written here. The dates are now fixed: 28 and 29 December, and Bormio brims with anticipation for the opening gate.

Skiing in Bormio: How it all began

The modern era of skiing in Bormio began in the early 1980s with the organization of the World Series. This served as a sort of dress rehearsal for the 1985 World Championships, held on Bormio’s Stelvio Slope and the Cevedale slope in Santa Caterina Valfurva. The events were a great success, and in 1993, the Stelvio slope became a permanent fixture on the men’s World Cup circuit.

The great champions are seen on the Stelvio

The snow on the Stelvio slope is always prepared at the very limit of skiability—hard as ice!

A race on this snow is never anonymous. To win on the Stelvio, you truly have to be great. Just look at the list of World Cup downhill winners to understand its prestige.

How well do you know the Stelvio slope?

Do you remember the epic 1995 World Cup finals? Just one name: Alberto Tomba! Even 30 years later, the image of Tomba lifting the crystal globe at the end of a legendary run remains vivid.

In 2000, the spotlight shone on Austrian Hermann Maier. At the 2005 World Championships, we remember the acrobatics of Bode Miller and Benny Raich, and the classy duel between Croatia’s Janica Kostelic and Sweden’s Anja Paerson. Today, the undisputed king of the Stelvio slope is Dominik Paris, known to all as “Domme.”
