Explore one of the oldest and largest national parks in Italy.
Founded in 1935, the Stelvio National Park covers 130,700 hectares on both sides of the border between the Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige regions and is easily reached from Bormio. An impressive 75% of the park is over 2,000 m above sea level, reaching a height of 3,905 m with the Ortler mountain group. From the valley floor up to its perennial glaciers, the area is heaving with biodiversity.
Golden eagles, bearded vultures, ibexes, chamois and deer. These are the Big 5 of the Stelvio National Park, the wild animals that symbolise the protected area on Bormio's doorstep, one of the most remarkable in the Alps.
Hiking through the forest, you'll come across squirrels and both red and roe deer. Heading further up the mountain to the high pastures, get ready to spot chamois, black grouse and marmots. The higher you go you can see ibex and stoats moving over the rocky terrain. Don't forget to look up and you may see golden eagles and bearded vultures soaring through the skies.
When you go for a walk in the Stelvio National Park, you’ll find the area is teeming with lush vegetation everywhere you turn. Larches, rhododendrons, gentians, edelweiss and arnica are just some of the plants you can find here.
And with a little luck, you may even happen upon rare species like lady's slipper or alpine poppy.
You have surely heard of Val Zebrù and its characteristic wooden huts and variety of flowers. It is so beautiful that even golden eagles and bearded vultures have chosen it as their home.
And don't miss the Fraele Valley with its towers of the same name and the spectacular Cancano Lakes with their unmistakable blue-green waters.
Not to mention the legendary Gavia and Stelvio Passes. There are endless trekking and biking routes to choose from to visit them!
The Alpine Botanical Garden in Bormio is the ideal place to learn about local flora and plants.
It is a veritable treasure trove of biodiversity, home to 1,500 botanical species, 800 of which are typical of the protected area.
