Trying to decide where to go on holiday this autumn?
Autumn in Bormio is a wonderful time of year. The breathtaking scenery and the calm of the mountains from mid-September onwards make it the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday or long weekend.
1. Autumn at the thermal spas
After a day outdoors, there's nothing better than a dip in our hot thermal waters. The panoramic outdoor pools at Bormio's three spa centres – QC Terme Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi, and Bormio Terme – surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped peaks, are the pinnacle of Alpine wellness, revitalising body and mind.
2. Hiking and cycling
Autumn in the Alps is heaven for hikers and cyclists.
With less traffic on the road, this is the perfect time of year to take on the Stelvio Pass, including by e-bike.
If you prefer exploring on foot, there are endless options, from easygoing walks around the lakes at Cancano, to hiking trails in Val di Rezzalo and Val Viola.
3. Autumn skiing on the Stelvio
In Bormio you can ski out of season on the majestic Stelvio Glacier. At over 3,000 m above sea level, snow conditions in the autumn are perfect for skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and ski touring.
Ski over 20 km of perfectly groomed pistes suited to all levels, from beginner to advanced, and enjoy the changing Alpine scenery as autumn makes way to winter.
4. Explore Bormio’s history and cuisine
Taking a stroll through Bormio's old town in the autumn is like turning back the clock. The autumn colours add a magical atmosphere to the old town where the Middle Ages meet the Renaissance.
Bormio is also a culinary paradise blending tradition and innovation. Savour cheese from the local mountain pastures, seasonal mushrooms, pizzoccheri and other local delicacies, accompanied by local wines.
5. Nature in autumn: deer and foliage
Autumn in the Stelvio National Park sees nature in all its glory, when the forest reverberates with one of the most powerful sounds in the animal kingdom: the roar of the stag in deer rutting season, echoing among the spectacular autumn foliage in Alta Valtellina.
You can hear this primal call, and discover local plant and wildlife, on a walking tour with the local Alpine Guides.
Alternatively, the Alta Rezia Botanic Garden just outside the centre of Bormio is an oasis of autumn calm where you can admire Alpine plant life at a workshop or on a guided tour.
