Nestled in the heart of the Stelvio National Park lies the largest summer ski area in Europe, where from late May to early November you can ski pristine pistes and enjoy incredible views.
Of the many things to do in and around Bormio in the autumn, you can also ski on the Stelvio Glacier, where you’ll find the ski lifts running and winter-like conditions. Perfect for a weekend in Alta Valtellina with a difference.
The slopes on the Stelvio Pass
The Stelvio Glacier offers 20 km of slopes suitable for all levels, with 6 lifts including a cable car and drag lifts that take you from the Stelvio Pass at 2,758 m to an altitude of 3,450 m on Monte Cristallo.
Expert skiers can brush up on their technique while waiting for the winter season to start, while beginners can book a lesson with the ski schools in Bormio or up on the pass.
What to wear for autumn skiing
Not sure what to wear for skiing in the summer and autumn on the Stelvio? Despite the mild temperatures down in the valley, at altitude the conditions can change pretty quickly. We recommend dressing in layers, so you can easily adapt to the variable weather.
Don’t forget your helmet, sunglasses, sunscreen and gloves.
Cross-country skiing in the autumn on the Stelvio Glacier
Autumn on the Stelvio Glacier is ideal for cross-country skiing near Bormio. You can choose from two circuits: one at 3,180 m that can be reached by cable car, where you can ski against an incredible high-mountain backdrop, and another panoramic 6 km trail near the Stelvio Pass, which opens when conditions allow.
Autumn ski touring on the Stelvio Glacier
In the autumn, while the pass remains open, the Stelvio is a popular destination for ski touring enthusiasts. The low temperatures and first snowfalls create ideal conditions, with a compact, stable snowpack. There are several ski touring routes on the glacier for all levels, from beginner to expert. Be aware that ski touring on the Stelvio requires good fitness and ski technique. We recommend going with an expert Alpine Guide, who can choose the best route based on the snow and weather conditions.
