Valle di Fraele

Nature

The Fraele Valley, nestled in the Stelvio National Park, is one of the most scenic and fascinating valleys in the Upper Valtellina. Known for the iconic Fraele Towers, these medieval stone sentinels once guarded an important alpine route and now offer breathtaking views over the surrounding mountains.

Beyond the towers, the valley opens up to the spectacular Cancano Lakes: two turquoise and emerald artificial reservoirs that create a truly magical landscape.

Fraele Valley is a paradise for hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts. The Cancano Lakes Loop is a must-do: an easy, mostly flat trail perfect for a peaceful walk or bike ride in the heart of nature. Adventurers can also explore nearby wild and enchanting areas like Val Trela, Valle del Gallo, and Val Alpisella.

In the Middle Ages, this valley was a strategic crossroads along the Imperial Alemagna Road, used to trade Valtellina wine to Austria and Bavaria while salt arrived from the north. The Fraele Towers, built in 1391, still stand proudly, offering some of the best panoramic views in the Bormio area.

Fun fact: Fraele Valley is home to one of the largest populations of mountain hares in the entire Alps.
