Passo dell'Ables

From the hamlet of Le Fantelle in Madonna dei Monti, take path S547.1 uphill to the Alpe Solaz di Sopra. From here continue along path S531 where the path opens and winds up to the Observatory of the Stelvio National Park. After a long traverse over an old landslide you climb to the meadows of the Alpe Cristallo, where you cross a line of curving trenches dug in the ground, now completely overgrown. Higher up you cross a steep scree using what is left of the mule track to reach the foot of the final escarpment. The mule track bypasses a crag through a tunnel and rises steeply past two shelters in caves. Near the ridge there is a fork: to the right is the Ables Pass and to the left the Provolino bivouac, which you reach after passing a protected artillery position and an observation post in a cave.
