The Villa Manara Loop is a pleasant hike that takes you on a journey of discovery through the Sondalo area, taking in natural landscapes, rural villages, and traces of local history.
From the town center, the trail gradually ascends along ancient mule trails, passing through mixed forests of conifers and deciduous trees. As you gain elevation, the vegetation gives way to more open stretches, offering panoramic views of the town of Sondalo, the valley floor, and the mountains of the middle and upper Valtellina.
The main destination of the hike is Villa Manara, a rural building constructed in the 19th century in a scenic location on the left bank of the Adda River. The name is said to derive from the nickname of the farming family originally from Grosio who were its first owners. The building, constructed primarily of stone and wood, has been used over the years for various purposes related to agricultural life and the local community.
After reaching this picturesque mountain hamlet, the route continues along forest roads, meadows, and sections through the woods, gradually beginning the descent toward the valley floor.
The route then reaches the Mondadizza area, a historic hamlet of Sondalo, and connects to the Sentiero Valtellina bike and walking trail. Following this flat and easily navigable stretch, you finally return to the center of Sondalo and the starting point.
The hike is about 8.3 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of about 250 meters, and does not present any particular technical difficulties. However, the variety of terrain and the presence of some uphill sections make it more suitable for families with children who are already accustomed to hiking.
