From the IV Cantoniera on the Stelvio Road, park near the Swiss customs and head northwest on a marked path that climbs the Astras slope along the border between Italy and Switzerland. Here, you pass by the remains of Swiss field fortifications dating back to the Great War. With no difficulty, climbing the ridge among debris and rocks, you reach Piz Umbrail, an ideal observation point of the Stelvio area. From the summit, continue southwest along a trail that skirts the rough parts of the ridge. After passing the saddle, descend to a new gap and then climb to an altitude of 2989 m. Immediately after, descend further on the Graubünden side to bypass the towers. After regaining the ridge, without particular difficulty, climb to Punta di Rims. Descend along a poorly marked route toward the Bocchette di Forcola and, via path N145, cross the Val Forcola to arrive at Solena.
