The Monte Scale Loop is one of the most picturesque hikes in the Upper Valtellina, combining spectacular scenery, military history, and the characteristic landscapes of the Stelvio National Park.
The route begins near the Torri di Fraele and initially follows an old military mule track that crosses high-altitude pastures and a dense forest of mountain pines, reaching the Casina del Lago, which overlooks the tranquil Lago delle Scale. From here, the trail becomes narrower and more scenic until it reaches Forte Monte Scale, an important defensive structure from World War I.
Passing through the historic tunnel carved into the mountain, you emerge on the opposite side, where the view suddenly opens up to the Cancano Lakes, the Fraele Valley, and the mountains of the Ortles-Cevedale range.
A few minutes’ walk then leads to the Croce del Monte Scale (2,495 m), a magnificent panoramic viewpoint offering a 360° view of the Bormio basin, the Valdidentro, the Val Viola, and the Stelvio National Park.
The return trip follows the northern slope of the mountain along Trail No. 197, completing the loop through open terrain and coniferous forests.
The route features some exposed sections that require sure footing and a head for heights, but it offers one of the most spectacular views in the entire Upper Valtellina.
