The approximately 15-minute route is well marked with multiple brown signs indicating "abbey of Vallate." The first section from the center of Piagno (Cosio Valtellino) is on a paved road, then a mule track with a cobblestone surface, wide but with some slope.
The remains of St. Peter's Priory are in a picturesque clearing, surrounded by chestnut trees, locust trees and silence. The Cluniac site was active from 1078, when it was built, until Napoleonic times and is now one of the oldest monuments in Valtellina.
The best-preserved structures, all in local stone, are the bell tower, the upper apse, part of the perimeter wall, and the walls of an adjacent building, possibly the monks' dwelling.
