The route of about 15 minutes is well marked with several brown signs indicating "abbey of Vallate". The first part from the center of Piagno (Cosio Valtellino) is on asphalt road, then mule track with a cobbled surface, wide but with a certain slope.
The remains of the Priory of San Pietro are in a picturesque clearing, surrounded by chestnut trees, locust trees, and silence. The Cluniac site was active from 1078, the year of its construction, until the Napoleonic era and is today one of the oldest monuments in Valtellina.
The best-preserved structures, all made of local stone, are the bell tower, the upper apse, part of the perimeter wall, and the walls of an adjacent building, perhaps the monks' residence.
