The Giro del Monte Scale is a comprehensive and highly varied trail running route, ideal for those looking for a medium-distance workout without reaching high altitudes.
The route is 12.4 km long, with approximately 783 meters of elevation gain, and reaches a maximum elevation of 2,084 meters.
The loop winds along the slopes of Monte Scale, the mountain that separates the Bormio basin from the Cancano Lakes area. From the very first kilometers, the elevation gains gradually as the route alternates between forest trails, more open stretches, and panoramic views of the valley.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the route is the constant interplay between nature and history. In fact, this area preserves numerous remnants of the defensive system built between the late 19th century and World War I to control access to the Upper Valtellina.
Continuing on, you’ll reach the Torri di Fraele, two medieval structures situated at the entrance to the valley of the same name that have become one of the region’s symbols. From here, the trail continues along the slope of Monte Scale before beginning the descent and completing the loop.
It is a particularly enjoyable trail due to the variety of terrain and landscapes it traverses: challenging enough for a good workout, but without the characteristics of a high-mountain route.
