The route is technically challenging; it follows the new S519 trail that runs above State Road 300 at the Gavia Pass toward the village of Plaghera, crosses the Vacche Bridge, and climbs to Dosso Tresero, where you can stop for a packed snack and admire the sweeping view of the entire Valfurva valley. After taking a selfie with the stage marker, continue along a fantastic, highly technical single track that leads to the pastures of Alpe Cerena and then descends to Cerena on the new trail opened in fall 2022, continuing on to the Stella Alpina Mountain Hut, where you can stop to recharge your energy and your batteries. From here, the stage continues along the paved road leading to the Rifugio Forni, the starting point of Stage 9.
NOTES:
- This stage is quite long and takes place on high-mountain trails; it is recommended only for experienced mountain bikers.
- The section between Ponte delle Vacche and Alpe Tresero has several very steep sections, which are manageable on an e-MTB but only for a few on a standard MTB.
Easy Alternative: For those who wish to reach the start of Stage 9 in Forni while avoiding the steepest and most technical sections, you can opt to descend along the provincial road to the Plaghera mountain pasture, take Trail S508, and descend to Santa Caterina along the Sentiero delle Sorgenti, and then continue on the paved road to the Forni parking lot.
Recharge points: Malga dell’Alpe, Rifugio Stella Alpina, and Rifugio Forni.
