Stelvio E-Bike Tour – To Forte Venini, Through Villages, History, and Panoramic Views

Cycling toward Oga means gradually climbing above Bormio and viewing the valley from a completely different perspective. Thanks to the e-bike, this excursion is accessible even to those who aren’t particularly fit and allows you to experience a day rich in history, nature, and scenery.

The route begins at the Sala Crist Mill, a testament to the rural way of life that has shaped these valleys for centuries. Powered by water, it serves as a reminder of just how indispensable streams and canals were to the daily lives of Alpine communities.

From Bormio’s historic center, following bike paths, you’ll reach the Church of San Gallo, one of the oldest places of worship in the Upper Valtellina. First mentioned as early as the 13th century, it preserves precious medieval frescoes and tells an important part of the valley’s religious history. Not far away are also the Prato della Giustizia and the Soldiers’ Cemetery, sites that preserve some of the most significant chapters of local history.

The climb continues toward Oga, passing through meadows and woods until you reach the quaint Little Church of Oga—a landmark of the village—and the picturesque hamlet, where stone and wood houses still exemplify traditional Alpine architecture.

A short distance further on stands Forte Venini, at an elevation of 1,700 meters, one of the best-preserved military fortifications in the entire Upper Valtellina defensive system. Built in the early 20th century to control access to the Alpine passes, today it offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Bormio basin, the Valdisotto, and the mountains of the Stelvio National Park.

After visiting the fort, you’ll head back down the road to the center of Oga, where the route continues along the pleasant dirt road of the Levissima springs, nestled in the woods and fully rideable on an e-bike. This is the source of one of Italy’s best-known mineral waters, naturally filtered for decades through the rocks of the Upper Valtellina mountains.

The descent through Calosio then leads to Santa Lucia, from where the return to Bormio follows the peaceful Strada dell’Alute, winding through meadows, small rural villages, and offering splendid views of the valley.

This route alternates between relaxing bike rides, military history, rural architecture, and some of the most beautiful views in the area.
