Stelvio E-Bike Tour: Churches, Villages, and History Between Bormio and Valfurva

Exploring the Upper Valtellina by e-bike means taking the time to look around, stop, and let yourself be surprised by places that tell the story of over a thousand years of history.

This route connects some of the most charming villages and monuments between Bormio and Valfurva, alternating between peaceful bike paths, secondary roads, and easy dirt roads—all easily navigable on an e-bike.

The route passes through the medieval historic center of Bormio, where narrow streets, squares, and ancient buildings tell the story of one of the most important villages in the Alps, before following the valley floor to discover small churches, historic bridges, rural hamlets, and little-known corners.

Among the most interesting sites is the Church of San Nicolò, which dates back to before 1223 and was the first church in the Bormio valleys to become independent from the ancient parish church. Over the centuries, the building has been remodeled several times and still preserves elements of particular value, such as the portal made of green Campello stone, the 18th-century Baroque altarpiece featuring a statue of St. Nicholas, and various wooden works of art. On the facade of the nearby parish house, there is also a 16th-century fresco depicting the Virgin and Child.

As you cycle at a leisurely pace, you can admire the characteristic “baitelli” (small pastures), mowed meadows, stone walls, and traditional Valtellina homes that still retain the charm of Alpine architecture.
