The route is very challenging due to its length, high altitude difference, and slopes that often exceed 15%, forcing frequent use of medium-high motor assistance. Starting from Vervio on asphalt, you reach Rogorbello, where the road becomes steeper and climbs with many hairpin bends, passing several inhabited areas before arriving at the huts of Susen. The location extends over a strip of meadows, from which there is a beautiful view of the Valtellina. The route continues, soon becoming a steep dirt road and reaches under the harsh rock face that delimits the valley. You pass the car parking area and near the waterfall of the Saiento stream to reach the last short but very steep stretch on a mule track: those unable to pedal it must leave the MTB parked. This leads onto the plain of Rifugio Schiazzera, created by the renovation of the former Finance barracks. Text and photos by Federico Pollini.
