The climb has a rather high average gradient (10 %) and peaks up to 15 % in the last section: beware of frequent use of medium-high assistance. You climb up the southern slope of Monte Masuccio, on a paved road with little traffic that passes through diverse and fascinating environments. You pedal the entire first part through vineyards until you reach the hamlet of Baruffini where you can see typical rural stone dwellings with elegant wooden balconies blackened, like the facades, by smoke from the hearths. Continue along the road that climbs between woods and meadows. Leave the detours to Pra' Fontana and Alpe Ghiaccia on the right, pass Pra' Baruzzo and tackle the last steep kilometers to reach Pra' Campo, once the site of one of the Finance Barracks (the building is still there). A wide panoramic meadow over the middle Valtellina is the destination of the route. Text and photos by Federico Pollini.
