This stage is characterized by a remarkable elevation gain that approaches 2000 meters. Starting from the city of Tirano, you initially follow the old mule track that leads to the hamlet of Roncaiola, passing among the last vineyards on the Rhaetian side of the Valtellina. After the hamlet, the path first follows a steep trail, then a mule track up to the locality of Pradentia, then descends slightly eastward passing through the Pra Baruzzo locality. You climb again along the slopes of Monte Masuccio, first along a forest track to the Sovo locality, then take a path which, with a final steep staircase to overcome a rocky bastion, arrives at the Schiazzera Refuge, a former Guardia di Finanza barracks that reminds us of the smuggling period with neighboring Switzerland.
