After several days, the Sentiero Italia returns to lowland altitudes near the city of Tirano with this long stage, featuring intermediate ascent elevation gain and significant descent elevation loss. From Prato Valentino, the route follows the ski slopes towards the mountain, then arcs towards Monte Cancano at 2435 meters altitude. After a section bordering the Swiss border from Borgata di Lughina, the path descends decisively following some stretches of drivable road down to Tirano, the Italian terminus of the famous Bernina Railway that connects the Valtellina with Sankt Moritz.
