The Sentiero del Viandante is a hiking route of approximately 70 km, which runs along the eastern shore of Lake Como, specifically along "that branch of the lake of Lecco." It then continues into Valtellina on the Orobie shore until Morbegno. The route does not trace an actual ancient road but is the result of the combination of several paths that in the past connected the villages on the Lecco shore of the lake and which in turn were part of a wider system of routes connecting Milan to the Alpine passes. For more information, visit the official Sentiero del Viandante website.
The route is marked by typical orange arrows and can be hiked in full or in stages. Of note are the frequent intersections with the Lecco-Colico-Sondrio railway line, which allow hikers to cover the Sentiero one stage at a time, returning by train to the starting point. Timetables and frequencies can be found on trenord.it. Additionally, the section of the route on the eastern shore of Lake Como has 7 docks served by regular line boats of the Navigazione Laghi service.
