The Alta Via della Valmalenco is a high altitude hiking route consisting of 8 stages for about 110 km, eventually leading back to the starting point, or it can be broken into mini High Routes of only 2 or 3 days. There is a main route or variants that join the most important huts in Valmalenco. On the way, the most significant and panoramic points of the valley are touched upon: the Chiareggio basin, Lake Palù, the Scerscen valley, and the Campo Moro and Campo Gera dams. In the fantastic panorama among pastures, mountain pastures, lakes, forests, quarries and passes, the majestic Disgrazia, Bernina and Scalino glaciers can be admired. The Alta Via requires a fair amount of physical effort and good preparation. In fact, there are some stretches that should not be approached superficially, but with mountain equipment. Prudence and caution are still qualities required of everyone. Training is still recommended for the more demanding stages. Because altitudes around 3,000 meters are touched, the Alta Via is only doable in the summer months.
