One of the most challenging and spectacular loop rides you can take starting and arriving in Livigno. Six challenging climbs and four legendary Alpine passes: Passo d'Eira, Passo Foscagno, Passo del Mortirolo and Passo Gavia. For an epic route that traces the roads traveled by the greats of the Giro d'Italia.
The route begins in the center of Livigno, with an initial flat section on the town's main street, ideal for warming up the legs. It turns by tackling the last very short flat section before the ascent to Passo d'Eira. You climb through the Teola area fprosecuting towards Trepalle, on a climb characterized by medium gradients and and some steeper segments. The drop at Passo d'Eira gives a splendid view of Livigno, followed by a smooth descent through Trepalle and ending just after the tunnel.
From here it's immediately uphill again to Passo Foscagno: the first section is quite steep, but the gradient softens in a long, steady section before the final two hairpin bends that test the legs again. After the top, a long descent leads through Arnoga, San Carlo and Semogo to Isolaccia, where the road becomes gradually gentler, with sections of pano and falsopiano downhill.
It then continues in the direction of Bormio, passing through Premadio along a short descent. After passing Bormio, the route moves onto the Santa Lucia road and passes through several picturesque Valtellina villages before reaching Mazzo di Valtellina. This flat section is the last moment of respite before perhaps the toughest challenge of the entire route: the ascent to the legendary Mortirolo Pass, a climb known for its extreme gradients that allows no breathing room.
From Mazzo you climb to the conquest of the Mortirolo. Once at the summit, a steep and technical descent follows, ending shortly after Monno. You then face a slightly uphill stretch to Ponte di Legno, where you can enjoy a moment of recovery on a false flat before attacking the second major climb of the day: the Passo Gavia. This is a long, steady climb to Lake Nero and Lake Bianco, traversing spectacular alpine scenery to the summit.
From Gavia, it's down a scenic and challenging road to Santa Caterina Valfurva, then back to Bormio. From here, you retrace the outward route back up to Premadio and Isolaccia, tackling the long, steady climb to the Foscagno Pass followed by the last climb of the tour to the Passo d'Eira, then ending the day's biking with a final descent to Livigno.
