La chiesa risulta essere una delle opere più notevoli dell’antico borgo di Bormio, soprattutto per via della bellezza delle sue decorazioni interne.

La chiesa, in stile barocco, presenta due altari laterali ma è quello maggiore che richiama l’attenzione: su di esso sono infatti collocate due splendide tele di Giambattista Muttoni, allievo del grande pittore gesuita Andrea Pozzo, che raffigurano la Morte di S. Ignazio e la Presentazione delle regole della Compagnia di Gesù a sua santità il Papa. Sempre il Muttoni è l’autore degli affreschi dell’imponente cupola, realizzati con la tecnica pittorica del trompe l’oeil  e raffiguranti la Discesa dello Spirito Santo e alcune scene prese dalla vita dei Gesuiti. La parte inferiore, invece, fu dipinta da Giacomo Lecchi ed Eugenio Ricci. Da ricordare infine che sotto il presbiterio della chiesa, seppur chiuse al pubblico ma pur sempre di grande fascino, vi sono le tombe dei Padri e dei Fratelli del Collegio gesuita.

Guided tour of the Church of St. Ignatius led by the “Volontari per la cultura.”

Church of St. Ignazio

The church is one of the most remarkable structures in the historic village of Bormio, particularly due to the beauty of its interior decorations.

The Baroque-style church features two side altars, but it is the main altar that draws the most attention: on it hang two splendid paintings by Giambattista Muttoni, a student of the great Jesuit painter Andrea Pozzo, depicting the Death of St. Ignatius and the Presentation of the Rules of the Society of Jesus to His Holiness the Pope. Muttoni is also the artist behind the frescoes on the imposing dome, executed using the trompe l’oeil technique and depicting the Descent of the Holy Spirit and several scenes from the lives of the Jesuits. The lower section, on the other hand, was painted by Giacomo Lecchi and Eugenio Ricci. Finally, it is worth noting that beneath the church’s presbytery—though closed to the public but nonetheless fascinating—lie the tombs of the Fathers and Brothers of the Jesuit College.
