An opportunity to discover up close the conservation and restoration activities on the Renaissance frescoes found in the former submerged church of San Giacomo di Fraele, and to learn about the history of the valley and its transformation with the creation of the Cancano lakes.
During a period when the water level of the artificial Cancano lake had dropped, thanks to the contribution of the Carabinieri Forestali from the Valdidentro command, the church’s wall perimeter was identified beneath the rubble. Subsequently, a careful debris removal operation was carried out, leading to the discovery of the frescoes, preserved in remarkably good condition.
Today, this extraordinary heritage is the focus of an important restoration project.
During the visit, restorer Angela Martinelli of Valdidentro will illustrate the stages of the ongoing restoration and the care taken to bring these works of art back to life. A representative from Stelvio Park will расска to the history of the Fraele valley, an important trade hub in the Middle Ages, which was completely transformed by major hydroelectric works. Finally, we will discover the future project for relocating the frescoes to the former San Giacomo canteen.
A moment to learn, reflect, and share a heritage that belongs to the entire community.
