Discovering the Churches of Bormio - Free guided tour of the Church of S. Crocifisso organized by the "Volunteers for Culture"
The Church of S. Crocifisso (or S. Antonio Abate) was built in 1368 and boasts a remarkable quantity and quality of frescoes.
Its name honors the crucifix that the people of Bormio used to carry through the streets of the town on the first Monday of June each year (a tradition dating back to the 14th century). The small sanctuary is characterized by the remarkable quality of the frescoes preserved within it, although the architectural structure has been modified several times over the centuries. Among the oldest depictions are the Flagellation of Christ (dated 1368), the Crown of Thorns, and the crucifix.
Today, the church is particularly known for the blessing of animals held in the churchyard on January 17 each year, on the occasion of the feast of S. Antonio Abate.
