Church of St. Ignatius
The church is one of the most remarkable works of the ancient village of Bormio, especially due to the beauty of its internal decorations.
The church, in Baroque style, features two side altars, but it is the main altar that draws attention: on it are placed two splendid paintings by Giambattista Muttoni, a pupil of the great Jesuit painter Andrea Pozzo, which depict the Death of St. Ignatius and the Presentation of the Rules of the Society of Jesus to His Holiness the Pope. Muttoni is also the author of the frescoes on the imposing dome, created using the trompe l’oeil painting technique, depicting the Descent of the Holy Spirit and some scenes from the lives of the Jesuits. The lower part, however, was painted by Giacomo Lecchi and Eugenio Ricci. Lastly, it is worth mentioning that beneath the presbytery of the church, although closed to the public but still fascinating, are the tombs of the Fathers and Brothers of the Jesuit College.
