An opportunity to discover up close the restoration and conservation work on the Renaissance frescoes found in the former submerged church of San Giacomo di Fraele, and to learn about the history of the valley and its transformation with the creation of the Cancano lakes.

During a period of lowered water levels in the artificial lake of Cancano, the perimeter walls of the ancient church were identified beneath the rubble, thanks to the contribution of the Carabinieri Forestali of the Valdidentro command. A delicate operation of debris removal was then undertaken, which led to the discovery of the frescoes, preserved in surprisingly good condition.

Today, this extraordinary heritage is at the center of an important restoration project.

During the visit, restorer Angela Martinelli from Valdidentro will illustrate the stages of the ongoing restoration and the meticulous care taken to bring these works of art back to life. A representative of the Stelvio National Park will recount the history of the Fraele Valley, an important commercial crossroads in the Middle Ages, which was completely transformed by major hydroelectric works. Finally, we will discover the future project to relocate the frescoes to the former refectory of San Giacomo.

A moment to learn, reflect, and share a heritage that belongs to the entire community.
