The Palio delle Contrade originates from the (healthy) opposition between the Reparti of Bormio, the districts of the village, each marked by a color and a specific symbol:
- Buglio - blue color, fountain symbol
- Combo - white color, cat symbol
- Dossiglio - green color, watermill wheel symbol
- Dossorovina - yellow color, Kuerc and Torre delle Ore symbol
- Maggiore - red color, wolf symbol
During the Palio delle Contrade, each Reparto tries to recruit as many people as possible for the cross-country and downhill races, requiring a great spirit of participation. Each participant, to earn more points, is encouraged to wear period costumes, garments in their faction's colors, and to use ancient wooden skis.
In this particular year, the program only includes the cross-country skiing race through the historic center of the village, divided by category, that of the Bocia (children) and that of the Granc (adults), as well as a relay race for each Reparto.
