The climb has a rather steep average gradient (10%) with peaks up to 15% in the last section: be careful to frequently use medium-high assistance. The south slope of Monte Masuccio is ascended on an asphalted, lightly trafficked road that crosses different and fascinating environments. The entire first part is cycled through vineyards until reaching the village of Baruffini, where you can observe typical rural stone houses with elegant wooden balconies darkened, like the facades, by the smoke of the hearths. The road continues uphill through woods and meadows. On the right, the detours to Pra' Fontana and Alpe Ghiaccia are left behind, passing through Pra' Baruzzo and tackling the last steep kilometers to reach Pra' Campo, once the seat of one of the Finance Police Barracks (the building is still present). A large panoramic meadow overlooking the middle Valtellina is the destination of the route. Texts and photos by Federico Pollini.
