Excursion in Valle dei Vitelli

Excursion in Valle dei Vitelli from the II Cantoniera to “Le Buse” military village – In the calcareous silence of memory and wildlife

The excursion starts at the parking of the II Cantoniera. From here, after going back to the last hairpin turn we met on the main road (2.152 m), we will take the trail of the Vitelli Valley. After gaining altitude with some short ramps and having crossed the small stream at the bottom of the valley, the trail rises more smoothly on the left side of the valley. Having reached 2.440 m, we will descend to the old military village of “Le Buse” (2.377 m). This important fortified complex is made of 17 buildings intended for troops, artillery and bombardment stations and an articulated network of trenches. The route unfolds in the “dolomitic” sector of the Park, consisting of calcareous sedimentary rocks. The rich vegetation showcases a multitude of species during blooming season, such as the Rhaetian poppy, the carnivorous alpine butterwort and the mountain avens, the latter species very common in the post-glacial period. Animals are also common: meeting chamois, ibex and marmots is very easy, including the bearded vulture, which nests not far from the area.
