The essence of the Alps. In Valfurva nature reigns supreme with its untouched valleys and majestic peaks. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and enjoy the silence of the mountainside.
Valfurva is nature, in all its forms.
Do you love hiking and mountain biking? Enchanting valleys like Val Zebrù, Valle dell’Alpe, Valle dei Forni and Val Cedec, at the foot of the Forni Glacier (the largest in the Italian Alps), await. The Forni, Gavia and Stelvio were theatres in the Great War and there are still visible traces of trenches and military mule roads.
The Gavia Pass evokes epic stages of the Giro d’Italia and sets any cyclist’s pulse racing.
The winter sees abundant snowfall, which combined with the often rigid temperatures, lasts throughout the season. Ideal for snowshoeing through silent forests, ski touring or fat-biking. And of course skiing. The slopes of Santa Caterina Valfurva have hosted World Cup and World Championship ski races. Olympic champion Deborah Compagnoni was born and raised here - what better guarantee of success?
Nordic ski enthusiasts can enjoy the Valtellina cross-country piste with two trails, one competitive and the other for tourists, both immersed in the pine forest.
But the soul of the furicc (as the inhabitants are known in local dialect) is reflected in the traditional wooden mountain huts, the small churches and roadside shrines (the tiny Church of Teregua, so simple on the outside and so richly decorated on the inside, is particularly lovely) and in the farmhouses. Simple in character, attached to tradition.
To get to know them better, a visit to the Valley Museum is essential, while at the Visitor’s Centre you can discover all the secrets of the Stelvio National Park, where ‘gipeto’ (the bearded vulture) is given pride of place.
