At 2,117 metres above sea level, the Splügen Pass marks the border between Italy and Switzerland, linking the Upper Spluga Valley in Valchiavenna with the Upper Rhine Valley. Used since prehistoric times, as evidenced by Stone Age remains found at nearby Pian dei Cavalli, it became a strategic trade route under the Romans, who built a paved track known as the Via Spluga. This route, partly restored and now open to hikers, remained in use for centuries until 1821, when the Austrians constructed the carriage road that still follows much of the original alignment. Surrounded by rugged peaks and breathtaking vistas, the Splügen Pass retains its timeless charm, offering a journey where Alpine history, culture and nature meet.
