Storyline
Ezio Armando Salvadori was in his early twenties when his life changed forever. With his comrades from the 5th Alpine Regiment, he was in South Tyrol on 8 September 1943, when Italy signed the armistice. In the chaos of those days, he was captured by the Germans and, like 650,000 other Italian soldiers, deported to internment camps. Deprived of their status as prisoners of war because they refused to collaborate with Nazi-Fascism, the Italian Military internees were forced into forced labour and to survive amid hunger, fatigue and humiliation. Salvadori spent two years first in East Prussia, then in Germany in a large railway workshop. In his diary, written years later with incredible lucidity, fear and loneliness resurface, but also friendship and small gestures of humanity that helped him and his comrades resist. His wooden suitcase, built by a fellow prisoner, becomes a symbol: not just a container for the little food, but a refuge for memories and dignity. The preface by Giovanni Peretti historically contextualises the diary, illustrating the story of the IMIs, men who chose not to collaborate with Nazi-Fascism at great cost. A page of history that deserves to be remembered.
